Doppelganger

I decided to return to one of my favorite ways of doing art: abstract design on yupo paper using liquid acrylics. This piece began as a demonstration of a colorful substrate in my “Adventures in Mixed Media Class” at the Art Center.
I brought it home and painted it as another in my series of “collective-consciousness” primitive god-like images. Other works in the series include “Ghosts of Africa” and “We Will Take Care of You”. I keep on wanting to title these pieces “I think they’re trying to tell us something” but I have come to understand that indeed that is why I paint them: to find out what “they” are trying to say. I hope I never find out because I do not want to stop the process. I just purchased a whole pile of yupo paper so that I may continue to work in this series.
I call it “Doppelganger” because of the two remaining circle shapes that refused to be subdued as I worked.
It is 26 x32 inches and is for sale for $1500.00, matted and framed.

Making Peace with Circles

This watermedia piece was done on a hand-made piece of paper. True to my style, it also has layers of collaged materials underneath. It turned into a grid by accident as a stamped in the circles. I named it “Making Peace with Circles” because of the calm blue background and the fact that I do not like to work with circle shapes generally. They are too perfect and sort of boring. I tried to make them less than perfect. This piece was juried into the Colorado Watercolor Society‘s annual New Trends Show in Denver in September to take place at the CoArt Gallery in the Santa Fe Street art district.
It is for sale for $1200.00 framed.

Merz Ditypch: Stuff I Picked Up Off the Ground

Here are two 10×10 inch cradled boards that I collaged upon using only papers, boxes, etc. that I picked up off the ground during my neighborhood walks. Some of the pieces are wonderfully weathered so I did not use any paint, just some gloss medium as adhesive. I did put some copper dust on the bottle cap and key tag so they would blend in better. I wanted to create something interesting to look at with junk that would otherwise be a nuisance.
This pair is priced at $500, although I would sell them separately for $225 a piece.

Blue and Yellow

Another still life with sunflowers which is a theme I keep coming back to. It must be the spirit of Vincent Van Gogh in my studio influencing me. This is a collage using a wonderful piece of yellow dot paper (the dots are bits of wax) that my friends brought back to me from Santa Fe. I must use it sparingly because it tends to call attention to itself.

Stopping Traffic

I did this collage as I was experimenting with mark-making with ink on a piece of watercolor paper that already had a collection of random collage pieces on it. The abstracted figures emerged and I continued to pull them out of the chaos. The red traffic signal shaped element is intriguing to me. This work has a tribal feel which I recreated in watermedia on yupo.
This may end up being a series.

Wildfire Afternoon

I painted this experimental watermedia piece on Yupo* several summers ago during an extreme drought in Colorado. There was an almost constant smoky haze and odor in the air from the many wildfires around the region.
I thought the intense hot colors of red, orange and rose had to be counter-balanced by shots of blues and greens. I couldn’t control the intensity of the weather, but I could control the environment of my painting.
This painting was juried into the 2002 Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club Exhibition at the National Arts Club in New York City.
It sold in 2004 to a collector in the Eastern U.S.
*Yupo is a plastic sheet paper used by watermedia artists. It has no absorption qualities and is great for experimental processes.
