I began this series (which is currently in progress) because I was interested in combining art history with portraiture collage. Each piece is based on a famous portrait with which I have taken great liberties. Most of the pieces contain elements of and references to classical paintings. I am having fun creating these accomplished ladies. The titles reflect their professions. None of them is “just another pretty face”.

Forest Collection
I began my love affair with doing forest collages because I was inspired by a photo one of my friends had taken of light shining through trees. I did a piece based on that image (with her permission) which sold pretty fast and I continue to enjoy making these green scenes with bits and pieces of ephemera. I am captivated by forests and trees and they show up often in my work. Most scenes are complete fantasies but harken back to that very first image of light shining through trees.

Public Art Collection
I am very lucky to have my artwork hanging in public collections throughout the state of Colorado. One of my pieces is in the Governor’s art collection. I have won commissions for Colorado Mesa University (Hawthorne Park and Serpent’s Trail hang in the Business and Education building) and many other of my works can be seen at St. Mary’s Hospital, Community Hospital and hospitals on the front range. Some folks have told me that seeing my art in the stressful setting of a hospital has made them forget where they are for a bit.. It really doesn’t get better than that for an artist.

Home At Last Collection
These pieces on fantasy interiors are all done on wooden cradled boards either 12″x 36″ or 12″x 48″. This is a cohesive collection based on these images of interiors done with magazine and newspaper advertisements. My focus is on the windows and multiple illusions of space. At a quick glance, these pieces look like they make sense and seem photographic. However, on closer examination, the viewer realizes that the scenes have a surreal and vaguely mystical quality.

Abstract Collection
Don’t let anyone tell you that doing abstract art is mindless and easy. These are the most difficult pieces of art I do. Each one represents a battleground of experimentation and improvisation. Many of these pieces are more watermedia and less collage. I use whatever works to satisfy my eye and my eye is not easily satisfied when it comes to abstraction. However, I continue to tackle the abstract when I want the excitement and peril of experimentation.
